This Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention (SNAP-Ed) Nutritionist position provides input into the planning for and conducts the implementation of public education to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among SNAP and SNAP eligible families and individuals encompassing all age groups through the Long Island Region. As part of the LI Region SNAP-Ed Program, this position works closely with the team of Nutrition Educators and the Project Director to conduct program delivery, evaluation, management and marketing. This position also collaborates with the SNAP-Ed staff conducting social marketing and environmental activities. This position will be beased in the CCE Nassau County office. Traveling between Nassau County partnered locations and Suffolk County partnered locations on a daily basis will be required.


This is a 1.0 FTE grant-funded position. Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program is through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS).

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Public Health or Health Education, appropriate to the responsibilities of the position, and a minimum of one (1) year related work or volunteer experience providing nutrition or health education to target audiences.
• Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
• Ability to flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
• Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.
• Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in Spanish and/or Haitian-Creole.
• Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with diverse audiences of all ages.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Must be able to purchase and prepare foods, utilizing business expense account and pragmatic use of resources.
• Must be able to review and follow recipes and assure compliance to federal and state guidelines.
• Proficiency in the use of modern electronic technology and software (e.g. video, audio, computers, texting, Microsoft Office Programs, social media, internet and database software, etc.).
• Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including marketing the SNAP-Ed Program and use of social media.
• Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Registered Dietician.
• Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.
• Familiarity with a variety of program delivery methods to reach individuals and groups in youth and adult audiences and ability to integrate youth and adult development principles into educational activities.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 80%

• Utilize established program resources and materials in program work.
• Implement existing SNAP-ED programming.
• Implement already-established SNAP-ED educational programing and program activities in support of other Nutrition programming efforts as identified/needed to support the established plan of work.
• Provide existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports with photos, and news releases, etc.
• Utilize existing program materials and educational framework to implement teaching of the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the SNAP-ED Program.
• Assess and implement Policy, System and Environmental initiatives as defined by SNAP-ED workplan.
• Occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans as identified.
• Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, adapt already established curriculum and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.
• Provide SNAP-ED educational programs via mass media.
• Work to foster acceptance of the SNAP-ED Program, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences.
• Assist the Supervisor in multi-association team efforts through joint planning and implementation of multi-disciplinary programs and program activities to deliver the SNAP-ED Program.
• Serve as a subject-matter resource in the area of Nutrition to staff and participants, community organizations and the general public.
• Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and Nutrition Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.
• Implement program evaluation as designed.
• Interact with program participants to obtain evaluation data, to include evaluating effectiveness of classes and instructors within program areas for all SNAP-ED Programs.
• Assist Supervisor in the process of analyzing program data, and based on that analysis, assist in making recommendations for improvements in program offerings.
• Communicate evaluation findings to constituents as appropriate.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction and Management - 5%

• Assist in the planning and promotion of major public events and programs including, but not limited to: assisting with mass media efforts related to upcoming events and programs.
• Assist in identifying and recommending program needs (i.e. program supplies and materials) to the Supervisor.
• Recruit volunteers to assist with program promotion and delivery, as needed.

Coordination/Operation - 10%

• Organize and coordinate program activities related to SNAP-ED Programming (i.e. food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.).
• Coordinate identified administrative aspects of the SNAP-ED Program to include, but not limited to: preparing correspondence, maintain files, etc.
• Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials.
• Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
• Assist the Supervisor and other Nutrition Educators in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of SNAP-Ed programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutritionists of the SNAP-ED program in the Central Region.
• Communicate with Nutrition Program Educators throughout the LI Region via electronic/mail and phone and at Regional Meetings, etc. Share curriculums, marketing strategies, assessment, and evaluation techniques to assist Supervisor to meet/exceed Program expectations.
• Maintain accurate records of enrolled participants using appropriate forms and computer databases, and assist supervisor with documentation of marketing and other qualitative report data (e.g., Success stories, etc.)
• This position may require the transport of program participants and/or program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

• In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
• Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time, non-exempt position, 40 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $30.00. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation and sick leave.
