Job Summary 

The Grant Writer’s primary responsibility is securing adequate private monetary support for The Road Home’s critical programs. The Grant Writer must communicate The Road Home’s story, mission, and vision to potential funders about our programs and work through all aspects of the grant cycle, from application to reporting. This position requires a high degree of organization, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to learn new tasks. This position will interact with multiple departments to compile documents, gather information, and write applications accurately to reflect current and future needs for all grants. The Grant Writer assists with program descriptions and data organization within the agency as we work to help people step out of homelessness and back into housing.

*This is an in-person position that requires travel between various resource centers and shelters. There may be flexibility for occasional remote work with work plan approval from the Development Director

Grant Writing 

• Manages timelines/deadlines for all foundation and corporate funding opportunities and communicates these to the Leadership Team. Ensures timely application submission to meet all deadlines and reports for up to 150 grants each year. 
• The grant writer is supported in this position by the Donor Relations Specialist and the Development Specialist.  
• Researches and identifies funding deadlines for current grant giving entities; analyzes giving history with our organization as well as other organizations;  authors grant applications, including correspondence; coordinates interdepartmentally, including with Accounting for financials/ budgets, IT for stats, and other departments as needed.   
• Maintains grants calendar with clearly identified due dates for applications, grant reports, required trainings and meetings.  
• Records grants submission/grant reporting in donor database in a timely manner, as well as master grant status sheet and monthly dashboard. 
• Recommends appropriate new grants for application and works with Director of Development to determine suitability. 

Identifying Funding Opportunities 

• Assists Chief Executive Officer and Director of Development with written correspondence as needed. 
• Supports the Development department with events and activities as needed. 
• Analyzes donor database for lapsed foundations and corporations; uses Instrumental directory and list servers for potential new funding opportunities. 
• Solicits input and provides suggestions to staff to help to create a case for support for programs. 
• Attends grant training, coordinates with other community providers, and relay important guidance to program supervisors. 
• Coordinate with individual departments and Grants Management on specific needs related to private funding.

*Other duties as assigned  

Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.  

Education and Experience 

• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required. 
• Two years’ experience in grant writing preferred.

• Ability to analyze and systematically compile and track information; prepare professional reports and correspondence. 
• Excellent knowledge of management information systems and software programs such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and the integration of such programs with donor database (EveryAction CRM). 
• Self-starter and self-directed. 
• Familiarity with Trauma-Informed Care and Housing First philosophies preferred. 
• Demonstrates sensitivity to diverse populations. Ability to contribute to the agency’s commitment to enhancing awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnic and cultural heritages. 

Physical and Equipment Requirements  

• Ability to lift 25 pounds (tables). 
• Ability to sit, stand or walk for an hour or more at a time. 
• Ability to use stairs, steps, and ladders 
• Ability to twist, bend, stoop and squat
