MNIT MDE manages the technical functions critical to managing public education in Minnesota; supporting systems including funding disbursement and large-scale, public-facing school performance data reporting.

As a Data Analyst, you will be responsible for developing, managing, and supporting Minnesota IT Services partnering with Minnesota Department of Education (MNIT MDE) data architecture across diverse data environments, focusing on data lake, data warehouse, and SQL Server solutions. Working within MNIT MDE's Azure data production environment, the Data Analyst ensures data operations are efficient, secure, and effective to support agency reporting and data-driven decision-making. The position leverages advanced data technologies to address the growing data analysis and engineering needs of MNIT MDE, exploring and implementing new data solutions while providing expert guidance to maximize data asset value.

Key responsibilities include ensuring data accuracy, completeness, accessibility, and security, as well as creating and maintaining analytical models and visualizations that support advanced analytics capabilities. Acting as a data steward, this expert collaborates with business stakeholders to align data assets with evolving business objectives and drive strategic initiatives through comprehensive data insights.

This position is currently eligible for full-time telework:

  • Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
  • Only candidates located in Minnesota and bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Wisconsin) are telework eligible.


Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a minimum of five (5) years of IT related experience in data analysis, data modeling, and data science administration.

Experience must include:

  • Experience developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting SQL databases.
  • Experience with data science tools, such as Power BI, Tableau, Azure Data Lake, WebFOCUS, and SQL/SSRS.
  • Ability to perform data querying, data aggregation, data matching, and database integration tasks.
  • Experience designing and developing data reports and visualization for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
  • Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.


A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data engineering, data analytics, and data science, including the ability to create and test hypotheses, troubleshoot complex issues, and apply innovative problem-solving approaches.
  • Experience with Python and R for data analysis and modeling.
  • Experience working with Azure Data Lake and familiarity with integrating data from multiple sources within data lake environments.
  • Ability to create and analyze KPIs and other performance metrics to measure business decision effectiveness.
  • Familiarity with T-SQL queries, views, and data marts.
  • Experience using GitHub or similar source control systems to manage and document code and data projects.
