Responsibilities:
- Provide Specialized Dementia Care: Assist clients with daily living activities (ADLs), such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and mobility support, while adapting care to meet their unique cognitive and physical needs.
- Engage in Therapeutic Companionship: Offer companionship that incorporates memory-enhancing activities and cognitive engagement specific to dementia care, promoting mental stimulation and emotional well-being.
- Implement Safety Protocols: Monitor clients to prevent wandering, ensure a safe environment, and apply fall-prevention strategies, addressing potential risks associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
- Support Structured Daily Routines: Help clients follow consistent daily routines to ease confusion and agitation. Assist with maintaining a predictable schedule for meals, activities, and rest to enhance stability and comfort.
- Manage Behavioral Changes: Recognize, manage, and respond calmly to behaviors such as agitation, confusion, or mood fluctuations, applying techniques learned through dementia care training.
- Provide Medication Reminders and Dietary Support: Ensure clients adhere to their prescribed medication schedules, provide reminders as needed, and assist with specialized meal preparation to meet dietary requirements.
- Facilitate Transportation and Outings with Care: Safely assist clients with transportation for errands, appointments, or outings, taking measures to reduce confusion and stress associated with changes in environment.
- Maintain Communication with Family and Care Teams: Keep family members and healthcare professionals informed of any significant changes in behavior, health, or overall well-being to support coordinated and effective care.
Requirements:
- Certification: Must hold Dementia Care Certification from a program approved by the Alzheimer’s Association.
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years’ experience providing care to clients with dementia or Alzheimer’s is required.
- Screening: Successful completion of a thorough criminal background check, drug screening, DMV record check, and negative TB test prior to employment. A fingerprint clearance card is highly preferred.
- Certifications: Valid First Aid and CPR certifications are required.
- References: Must provide two positive references from previous employers who can attest to your professional experience providing compassionate dementia care.
